Example of SCP-5000-EX

Special Containment Procedures:  [UPDATED 2028-9-28]: Due to updates to SCP-5000-EX’s containment class, it is currently undergoing declassification. Clearance for this document has been lowered to 0/VEILAAvailable to all individuals with knowledge of the anomalous. and all associated documentation has been given to all other major normalcy preservation agencies. Until declassification is finalized, containment is to be maintained.

Long Term Containment Procedures: Instances of SCP-5000-EX are to be contained as per standard Foundation protocols for low risk anomalous plants. All surplus instances of SCP-5000-EX-1 are to be incinerated. Instances of SCP-5000-EX-2 are to be quarantined until the effects of SCP-5000-EX-1 wear off. Any instances of SCP-5000-EX found in the wild are to be neutralized as per protocols. [UPDATED 2028-9-28]: As of the containment class update this directive has been receded.

Transport Procedures: Due to concealment issues, mature instances of SCP-5000-EX are not to be transported. Immature instances are to be transported using standard methods for safe class objects. However, it is preferred to transport instances of SCP-5000-EX-1 and create instances of SCP-5000-EX on site.

Instance Neutralization Procedures: If required instances of SCP-5000-EX and SCP-5000-EX-1 can be fully neutralized by incineration. Instances of SCP-5000-EX-2 can be neutralized using standard termination protocols.

Global Neutralization Procedures: [Restricted to Level 4 personal and above], please contact Head researcher Vern L Fleming if required.

Description: SCP-5000-EX is a species of tree that is visually similar to other flowering trees in the Malvaceae family. SCP-5000-EX produces a fruit possessing anomalous properties, labeled SCP-5000-EX-1. If a human of non-Maori descent consumes an unripe instance of SCP-5000-EX-1, after an average of two hoursBThis time varies significantly between ethnicities., the subject will become an instance of SCP-5000-EX-2. Unripe instances of SCP-5000-1 are reported as having a pleasant and distinct but difficult to describe taste and aroma. Ripe instances have no anomalous effect nor the distinctive taste.

SCP-5000-EX-2 is the collective designation for all individuals affected by SCP-5000-EX-1, instances are normally indistinguishable from baseline humans with the exception of a single anomalous property.

SCP-5000-EX-2's anomalous properties manifest when placing their hands on the bodies of non-human bilateral animals. The animal will suffer paralysis and eventually asphyxiation, with larger animals taking longer to succumb to the effect.

Instances of SCP-5000-EX-2 will eventually revert back to baseline human. The amount of time required is highly variable and based on numerous factors, the maximum known reversion time is four days. 1

Addendum 1: Discovery

Following reports of Fey activity in the area, SCP-5000-EX was first discovered in a remote glade in ██████ Kenya along with SCP-████, SCP-████ and SCP-████. After the properties of SCP-5000-EX were discovered, additional instances were found in uninhabited locations in Kenya and nearby countries.

Researchers note:

Alright then, another X-man fruit. Time to categorize the effects and then likely forget about it completely. Just like all the other anomalies like this.
Vern L Fleming

Addendum 2: Standard anomaly categorization tests

SCP-5000-EX was tested under standard known methods for studying and altering the effects of anomalous objects, see following table:

Test Result Researchers notes
Imaging of SCP-5000-EX using a standard model Kant counterCA device to measure the local intensity of reality No deviation from background Hume levels in SCP-5000-EX, SCP-5000-EX-1 and SCP-5000-EX-2. It doesn't have the most common source of anomalous properties.
Imaging of SCP-5000-EX using a standard model VERITAS systemDA device to measure magical energies SCP-5000-EX shows EVE emissions as expected for non-anomalous trees. SCP-5000-EX-1 shows EVE emissions and emission decay equivalent to other fruit. SCP-5000-EX-2 shows normal EVE emissions for baseline humans. There is a very slight flat component for all three. Effects are likely not due to a spontaneous thaumic working.
Akiva radiationEA measurement of faith and divinity SCP-5000-EX and SCP-5000-EX-1 show Akiva radiation level similar to recovered Sumerian artefacts. Possibly some religious context?
Testing of SCP-5000-EX under reality anchored conditions Under a standard 20Hm reality anchor, SCP-5000-EX's properties were unchanged. Definitely not any kind of reality bending or thaumatology.
Nomenclative testing An instance of SCP-5000-EX-1 was assigned different names by researchers, no effect could be found. Fey connection went nowhere.
Monopolar defect analysisFA new field of analysis of anomalies focused on non-analytic defects in spacetime, of which magnetic monopoles are the most common A sample of SCP-5000-EX-1 was tested for monopoles and other non-analytical spacetime structures, none were found Why did I think this would work again?
Testing the relation of SCP-5000-EX under Law of ContagionGOne of the three laws of thaumatology, the law states that "The part affects the whole" and is why blood is frequently used for scrying. An instance of SCP-5000-EX-1 was used as a scrying focus with no target, scrying returned the tree it was picked from. When this process was repeated on the tree it was taken from it returned the grove the tree was taken from. No single major source for this, likely natural and not created.
Testing the effects of SCP-5000-EX under the Law of SimilarityHOne of the three laws of thaumatology, the law states that "Like produces Like", this law is why newts eyes are frequently used in scrying rituals SCP-5000-EX-1 was used as a focus for a simple paralysis spell, the spell showed extreme effectiveness beyond all other focuses known for this spell. Weird, it seems this anomaly is the purest symbol of paralysis I have ever seen.
Pataphysical testing Not that kind of story Those guys weird me out.

Researchers note:
SCP-5000-EX does not match up with any known mechanism for anomalous activity. Despite this it shown some properties that are not commonly found on objects both anomalous and not. Assuming the grant application goes though, this will need more testing.
Dr Vern L Fleming

Addendum 3: Identification of SCP-5000-EX-3

Samples taken from the fingers of SCP-5000-EX-2 instances showed a novel alkaloid type organic compound labeled SCP-5000-EX-3. Testing has shown that when pure SCP-5000-EX-3 is applied to the skin of a bilateral animal, the same effects as contact with SCP-5000-EX-2 occur. 2

Molecular structures of SCP-5000-EX- 4 and SCP-5000-EX- 3 respectively

Addendum 4: Exploration of SCP-5000-EX-3's properties

The molecular structure of SCP-5000-EX-3 was tested for Thaumic properties, with a ritual circle containing the structure of SCP-5000-EX-3 showed no thaumic properties.

When a sample of SCP-5000-EX-3 was synthesized using SCP-████ ISCP-████ is capable of synthesizing arbitrary alkaloids. it maintained the same properties3. Furthermore, when synthesized via non-anomalous means, SCP-5000-EX-3 maintained its properties4.
SCP-5000-EX-3 was found to be a highly potent nerve inhibitor, by binding to calcium channels in the nervous system- muscle interface of the affected creature, SCP-5000-EX-3 is capable of shutting down all nervous signals to the muscles2.

Researchers note:
The paralysis effect seems to be non-anomalous in form, not the first time I have seen an anomaly have a mundane final step. Doesn't mean my work is done. Where SCP-5000-EX-3 comes from is still in question, given its not in SCP-5000-EX-2. The origin is still the big question, along with why it was such a powerful symbol of paralysis.
Dr Vern L Fleming

Addendum 5: Human immunity to SCP-5000-EX-3

It was discovered that humans are immune to the effects of SCP-5000-EX-3 due to an exporter protein in human nerve cells. This protein is only found in humans and prevents SCP-5000-EX-3 from killing the instance of SCP-5000-EX-2 before it can be discharged or excreted5.

Addendum 6: Isolation of SCP-5000-EX-4 and biosynthesis of SCP-5000-EX-3

Chemical analysis of SCP-5000-EX-2 shows a compound, labeled SCP-5000-EX-4, with significant chemical similarity to SCP-5000-EX-36. Bioinformatic analysis of the human genome for enzymes capable converting SCP-5000-EX-4 into SCP-5000-EX-3 discovered the two enzymes responsible for this process. These two enzymes were named 5000-redactase and 5000-methyltransferase7.

Both enzymes show significant genetic drift leading to an ethnicity dependent reduction in catalytic potential. In Maori populations there is a mutation in a catalytic residue of 5000-redactase stopping the enzyme entirely. Ancestral sequence reconstruction indicates that genetic drift started 40,000 years ago from a significantly more effective set of enzymes, it is estimated that the old form would only require an hour to convert a subject to a SCP-5000-EX-2 instance.

These enzymes are only produced in finger tips and lead to bioaccumulation of SCP-5000-EX-3 in the finger tips to be discharged.

Due to these discoveries SCP-5000-EX was reclassified to EparchJ"Eparch" is an esoteric class for objects that are anomalous in source but not in effect. on 2025-3-12 by a 8-3 classification committee vote.

Addendum 7: Ancestry of SCP-5000-EX and change in object class

Using phylogenetics it was determined that SCP-5000-EX diverged from known members of the Malvaceae family approximately one million years ago8. Given knowledge of its origins, SCP-5000-EX was reclassified to explained on 2028-9-28 by a 11-0 classification committee vote. Work on developing a weaponized version of SCP-5000-EX-4 is continuing.

Researchers note:
Sometimes it all just makes sense, savoir these moments.
Dr Vern L Fleming

Addendum 8: Near extinction of SCP-5000-EX

Based on petrified forests from Africa, SCP-5000-EX used to be very common until 50,000 years ago where it went into a period of slow decline. The current hypothesis it that this is due to the emergence of Homo Sapiens eating SCP-5000-EX-1 before the fruit could ripen causing the tree to not be able to spread its seeds properly.

The decline in SCP-5000-EX matches with a known tendency of humanity at the time of increased deference to the supernatural (as seen by rise in artwork glorifying the supernatural). While this is highly speculative, the SCP-5000-EX research team believes this is due to humanity being less able to stop other anomalous entities.

Researchers note:
Turns out that this fruit was the original way to die in the dark. Seems poetic.
